Chi Kitchen: a new partnership

Chi Kitchen's Executive Chef Ping Coombes shares her inspirational story and explains why she supports Action Against Hunger

This year we are delighted to welcome Mango Tree and Chi Kitchen, in both London and Birmingham, to the 2016 Love Food Give Food campaign. These venues are among 400 fantastic restaurants across the UK that are adding £1 to their customers’ bills this September and October, to help provide malnourished children with healthier futures. 


After winning Masterchef in 2014, Ping Coombes’ career has gone from strength to strength. Following her victory, she now runs street food classes and has appeared at food festivals and various restaurants across the UK, working under the name ‘Ping's Pantry’. 

Earlier in 2016, she was appointed executive chef of Chi Kitchen, where she hopes to add her unique style to the diverse menus influenced by Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean cuisine. Part of the group’s decision to support Action Against Hunger is due to Ping’s passion for sharing her love of food, and continuing her family’s tradition of charitable work. 

We caught up with Ping to find out why she supports Action Against Hunger, and where her love of food comes from

Where does your love of food come from?
The true inspiration for my cooking has always been my mum, she is an incredible cook and has passed down her knowledge and skills to me. I also draw a lot of inspiration from my memories of food as I was growing up in Ipoh, Malaysia. 

What is one of the most memorable moments of your career so far?
Aside from winning Masterchef, I would say publishing my cookbook, MALAYSIA. It was amazing to see it on the bookshelves and then to have people send me pictures of the dishes that they had cooked from my own recipes.

What first interested you to the Love Food Give Food campaign and Action Against Hunger?
My mum frequently gave food to various charities when we lived in Ipoh and she always encouraged me to do the same. This is such a great opportunity to follow her footsteps to help where we can. It is a privilege to be in a position where we live, eat and trade freely and every little helps those who can’t do the same.

We are delighted to be working with restaurants across the UK this Autumn, as we believe it is by working with those who love food that we will be able to achieve our mission of ending child hunger. Eat out at a participating Love Food Give Food restaurant during September and October and help support our vision of a world without hunger.
